WILL KICOMI BECOME A CORNERSTONE OF KISUMU'S ECONOMY AGAIN??

As i walk in the compound of KICOMI today, from the worn out gate and a bored security man at the gate, the scene that welcomes me is that of a deserted place.  One of the most known Cotton Mill company in Africa located along Busia way and from the look of the tarmac road, along where it is situated, transportation of cotton products to the market was easy. KICOMI was founded in 1964 with joint investor from the Khatau group of India and the Development Finance Company of Kisumu.  By 1970's KICOMI had emerged as the most important cotton processing plant with its main goal of cultivating locally grown cotton and process it into textiles that was sold in market locally and globally.  It provided employment opportunities locally and in the social economic development of Kisumu.  Why Kisumu? A city where the sun rises and sets on the shores of Lake Victoria, for that matter it had the favourable climate that did not complicate the spinning process of converting cotton ...

RISKING A SHAVE

Hair stylists and barbers are among people who are most likely to get infected with COVID 19 due to the nature of their work. They literally work on our faces, and maintaining social distance between a client and the one providing a service is not achievable. In a beauty salon setting for instance, there’s a lot of physical contact between the two. It is unavoidable, since the work requires this and more. The ’more’ comes in when you visit a beauty spa, there’s more than just physical contact while working on one’s hair. Facial and massage are among the services offered, and physical contact in this case is inevitable. It’s what comes with the job. However, some of the well-established beauty spas Vera Sidika spa for instance, are strictly adhering to the COVID 19 safety rules and guidelines. It is the responsibility of the employer to make sure the employees are well protected and kept safe from COVID 19 at all times. That includes the clients too. When it comes to local salons and ba...

FESTIVE SEASON AWAY FROM HOME

Image
Christmas for me has always involved packing and going on trips with my family. At times go to the village and have a gathering with my extended family. This is the season of interactions and getting to know what each member of the family has been up to the whole year. Engaging in different activities together is our definition of bonding time. Some might say Christmas is overrated but for us, it is what we look forward to every start of December. This season things are a little bit different, not just for us but the entire world. With the rising number of COVID 19 cases all around the world, all indoors and outdoors gatherings were banned. Family gatherings have been greatly discouraged, for this reason let me give you highlights of Christmas in school. Funny right😂? Christmas in school. Anyways let’s get straight to it. So, after getting a call from my mom on 23rd of December I had a mixture of thoughts. One that really got to me was going home not being the best idea. I had interac...

STEREOTYPES OF COVID-19 AMONG STUDENTS

Image
Stereotype refers to a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is defined as illness caused by a novel coronavirus now called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2; formerly called 2019-nCoV), which was first identified amid an outbreak of respiratory illness cases in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. It was initially reported to the WHO on December 31, 2019. On January 30, 2020, the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global health emergency. Illness caused by SARS-CoV-2 was termed COVID-19 by the WHO, the acronym derived from "coronavirus disease 2019. " The name was chosen to avoid stigmatizing the virus's origins in terms of populations, geography, or animal associations. In Kenya, the onset of the virus led to the closure of learning institutions to prevent further spread of the virus. While at home, students have been fed with various information as fa...

WORD ON THE STREET IS..

I recently had a ride on a motorbike, from home to Eldoret town and my driver engaged me in an interesting conversation. Well, you know what got everyone talking these days, the life threatening virus. It did occur to me that most of the people at home are very ignorant when it comes to matters of Covid 19. But what i didn't quite get was why a person would think all this is a scam meant to benefit the  government, even after witnessing the same disease taking down our own friends, relatives and politicians. However,I don't totally disagree i mean our  government hasn't been transparent enough when it comes to money matters and other businesses. I totally wouldn't blame anyone for having such negative thoughts.  Seconds after getting on the 'bodaboda' Covid 19 was all over the atmosphere. Not literally😁."Hii corona iko kweli? " He asked, and that's how our conversation kicked off. He continued, "unakumbuka ule dem Brenda, mwenye alipona  Cor...

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE NEW NORM

Image
A few months ago, when the first case of Covid 19 was reported in Kenya, at least everyone was talking about it. Those who knew nothing about it, those who pretended to be well informed about this life-threatening virus, medical practitioners who were and still are the front-line workers, the internet was ablaze with different articles and information about it, bloggers were also not left behind. Covid 19 managed to make people talk.   The government of Kenya did everything they could to stop the spread of this deadly virus, for many had never seen the government taking anything this serious.’’ Could this be the end of human race?’ whispers were heard all over. It all depended on oneself to take care and protect the ones they loved for things were getting serious. Panic and fear took over people, many started being cautious and observing the guidelines. No one wanted to be the first to be taken down by Covid. This moved on for months until when the Education Cabinet Secretary made ...

Hand washing has been one of the most important ways of controlling the spread of most infectious diseases. With COVID 19 pandemic,it has been highly regarded as key to preventing this disease. Many have been forced to adhere to different measures and regulations given by the ministry of health which include; frequently washing hands with soap and running water, social distancing especially in crowded places, wearing masks, avoiding social gatherings among others. In Moi university main campus students are seen to have greatly improved their hand hygiene. At the entrance of each school, they have set up hand washing places, each student who wants to access the schools has to pass by and wash their hands with soap and running water or else they’ll be denied entry. This is not limited to students only, but also applies to everyone else who wants to have access into the premises.
